Apprenti and SHRM Foundation Expand Human Resources Apprenticeship Program to Build Future-Ready Workforce
Apprenti and the SHRM Foundation have announced an expanded partnership to scale the Human Resources Registered Apprenticeship Program (HR RAP)—a hands-on, earn-and-learn initiative designed to create long-term career opportunities in HR.
The new initiative, titled Apprenti + SHRM Foundation HR RAP, combines Apprenti’s national expertise in launching and managing Registered Apprenticeship Programs with the SHRM Foundation’s deep knowledge of human resources and talent development. The partnership aims to help employers build a skilled HR workforce while offering individuals structured career development through work-based learning.
HR RAP integrates classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training, providing a dual benefit: employers gain access to cost-effective upskilling solutions, and apprentices gain real-world HR experience while earning a paycheck.
“The SHRM Foundation has created a thoughtful model for HR career development,” said Jennifer Carlson, Executive Director of Apprenti. “We’re proud to bring Apprenti’s national infrastructure and expertise to help expand HR RAP, ensuring more employers and job seekers can benefit from this hands-on, work-based pathway into the HR profession.”
The demand for HR talent is rising. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately 86,200 HR job openings are projected annually, with the field expected to grow by 8% through 2033—outpacing the national average. Despite this, many employers struggle to find candidates with the right combination of practical experience and HR knowledge. HR RAP addresses this workforce gap directly.
“Teaming up with Apprenti allows us to reach more employers and future HR professionals through an established, trusted apprenticeship infrastructure,” said Wendi Safstrom, President of the SHRM Foundation. “Together, we can accelerate the development of tomorrow’s HR leaders.”
As part of the partnership, Apprenti will provide the operational backbone to scale the HR RAP program nationally. Meanwhile, the SHRM Foundation will offer industry-led HR curriculum and employer outreach support. The Apprenti + SHRM Foundation collaboration is dedicated to strengthening the talent pipeline and shaping a more robust HR profession for years to come.
