D2L, a global learning technology company, has released new survey findings from Morning Consult showing that many U.S. workers are eager to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and grow their skills — but want more structured support and flexible learning opportunities from their employers.
The annual report, Upskill with Purpose: Creating a Future-Ready Workforce, surveyed nearly 1,000 full-time, salaried workers across the United States. Key insights include:
- 33% of workers fear AI could eventually replace their jobs.
- 69% believe AI will help them perform better, with 65% excited for AI to handle repetitive tasks and 68% expecting it to free time for more strategic and creative work.
- 75% want to upgrade their skills in the next three years, but 56% say they have been left to learn about AI on their own.
- 56% have engaged in self-paced AI learning, and 52% have participated in employer-provided training.
- 45% find interactive modules with instant feedback the most effective way to build skills.
“As AI becomes more integrated into the way we work and learn, it’s important that workers feel empowered with the right tools and resources to harness its potential,” said John Baker, President and CEO of D2L. “Employers have an opportunity to help workers grow their careers and develop AI skills with a more flexible approach to upskilling tailored to learning needs.”
Recommendations for Employers
The report calls for a balanced approach to talent development that promotes both technical and human skills. Suggested actions include:
- Develop AI literacy programs: Build confidence in AI tools while reinforcing uniquely human skills like critical thinking, communication, and emotional intelligence.
- Promote a “human + AI” mindset: Encourage experimentation, create safe spaces to test AI tools, and position AI as an enabler rather than a threat.
- Link learning to career growth: Show how training connects to promotions, lateral moves, pay increases, and job security.
- Adopt flexible, interactive formats: Provide structured training time during work hours, expand financial support, and use real-time AI-powered feedback to increase engagement and outcomes.
Survey Methodology
In January 2025, D2L commissioned Morning Consult to survey 996 full-time, salaried U.S. employees to understand how AI is influencing work and learning needs.
Next Steps
The upcoming D2L Executive Summit, scheduled for July 21–22, 2025, in Savannah, Georgia, will explore the report’s findings in greater depth. Leaders in corporate learning, higher education, and professional associations can register online.
