Professional Standards Institute (PSI) has announced the launch of 15 new “True” competency-based professional certification programs across five high-demand career fields. Following years of research and development, PSI has redesigned its certification framework to emphasize real-world performance and measurable expertise—setting a new benchmark for professional credentialing that delivers genuine industry value.

The Competency-Based Difference

Unlike conventional certification programs that rely on multiple-choice testing and minimal eligibility requirements, PSI’s model centers on hands-on, role-based, vendor-neutral assessments that reflect authentic workplace skills. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility criteria and demonstrate their abilities through realistic, project-driven evaluations.

“Competency-Based Assessments measure what an individual can actually do,” explained Gary Harris, Ph.D., Ed.S., Executive Director at PSI. “In contrast, a multiple-choice test only measures book knowledge and memorization.”

According to PSI, competency-based certifications provide a more accurate and practical measure of professional expertise, offering employers a clear view of a candidate’s true capabilities.

Peer Evaluation with Constructive Feedback

Each competency-based assessment is peer-reviewed by certified Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who possess extensive industry experience. Unlike automated scoring systems that simply produce pass/fail results, PSI’s evaluators provide written, personalized feedback to guide continued professional growth and mastery.

Three Certification Levels

PSI offers three progressive certification tiers, each designed to reflect advancing levels of expertise:

  • Professional: For experienced professionals; valid for five years.
  • Senior: For advanced practitioners; valid for five years.
  • Master: For recognized industry leaders; does not expire.

Five Career Areas, Fifteen Certifications

The new certifications span five core disciplines, each available at the three skill levels:

  • Enterprise Database Design and Development
  • Web Applications Design and Development
  • Systems Development Project Management
  • Business Project Management
  • Management Consulting

Professional Career Portfolio

All certification holders receive access to a Professional Career Portfolio—a digital, shareable profile showcasing their certifications, verified skills, and ongoing professional activities. “This portfolio can be easily linked to a résumé, personal website, or shared with employers,” added Harris. The portfolio empowers professionals to present a verifiable record of their competencies and achievements.

Introducing the PSI Employer Network

To bridge the gap between skilled professionals and hiring organizations, PSI has also launched the PSI Employer Network—a free online platform connecting employers with certified talent. Employers can browse Professional Career Portfolios to identify qualified candidates, while certification holders gain access to exclusive career opportunities within organizations seeking proven expertise.
